Okay Internet. Feel free to weigh in on this pet project our head chef whipped up this week.
We’re all regular readers of Y-combinator’s Hacker News here. A few weeks ago a site was featured that offers a non-technical person a link to the best “whatever” they might be looking for. No research needed – it’s based on aggregated review data & ratings.
Basically, if the majority of people (nearly a hundred thousand in this case) all have the same positive review of a Toshiba Portege Laptop, it must be a good one. Based on that, all you really need to decide is what your budget is going to be. Given good-better-best options, the well-educated choice is presented to you. Just click the link to buy it at Amazon, etc.
Unfortunately, the site is UK based and links only to products & models not available in North America.
Why not a version for North American then?
Great idea!
20 hours later a working mock-up was born.

Check out b.estprice.com
Still just a rough-draft. The name & design definitely need a little work. The categories & products need to be updated and/or expanded. But you should get the idea… a simple site, to answer a simple question:
What %insert-gadget-here% should I buy?
Planned updates if the project continues
Phase II of the project includes:
- More categories
- Easier sharing/recommendation access
- Cross-browser (mobile safari & IE) support
- proprietary ratings & voting system
Yay or nay?
So… that’s about it. Do you like it? Are you the person that always gets asked – what should I buy?
